In 2007, the Chicago Dancing Festival debuted to heighten awareness of dance in Chicago, increase accessibility to the art form and provide aspiration for local artists.
The Chicago Dancing Festival is the only free dance festival of its kind in the nation and its mission is to build new dance audiences through increased accessibility to a presentation of a wide variety of excellent dance, thereby furthering Chicago’s reputation, nationally and internationally, as a dance destination.
In nine seasons, the Chicago Dancing Festival has commissioned eight new works and presented more than eighty dance companies at five premier Chicago venues.
The Festival brings audiences together to share common cultural experiences and see the arts as integral to their lives and communities, providing free access to a breadth of forms of art that stimulate the imagination and provide an experience that inspires people.
As evidenced by growth from an initial audience of 8,500 people to now having built an audience close to ninety thousand attending from communities all across Chicago and surrounding areas, the Chicago Dancing Festival is succeeding in creating a broader interest for dance and building the next generation of attendees by providing greater accessibility to the art form through free admission thanks to the generosity of the Festival’s amazing supporters.
